William Robson, Artist, 1863 ~ 1950
William Robson lived and painted in Italy from 1883
until 1896, and in Scotland from 1896 until 1950.
He married Carmela
Spadaro while living in Capri ~ their marriage was long and happy and
they had seven children.
There are early photographs and letters sent to him
during the years that he lived in Italy from
his contemporaries, Francis
Maughan, Harold Speed, Charles Forbes, William P Andrews
and Enrico
Castellaneta.
There are also letters relating to his life after he returned to live
in Scotland from A.E.Hornel,
Charles Forbes, Robert Burns, Charles Mackie,
James Cadenhead, William McTaggart,
and Harold Speed, and invitations
and cuttings relevant to this period.
These letters and photographs give a glimpse into the
lives of the artists and writers of this period,
and give the impression
of fellow spirits who were 'doing their thing', painting, writing, often
far
from home and missing the companionship of friends, yet this and
material gain was repeatedly
set aside in order to be where they could
work best.
