William Robson in Italy ~ 1883 to 1896
William Robson lived and painted in Italy from 1883
until 1896, and worked in Venice and Florence,
but lived mostly on the
island of Capri in the Bay of Naples where he was a member of an
international
coterie of artists which included the Italian painters Fabbi and Castellaneta,
English painters James Charles and Harold Speed, writers Axel Munthe
and
Francis Maughan and sculptor Harvard Thomas.
During this time, he painted mostly in oils on wood
panel and his work developed from painting
initially small exquisite
studies of scenes on the island, to wider views with land, sea and sunsets,
with a feeling for, and appreciation of, the island as a whole.
So it was on Capri, while still a young man,
that he
began the transition from a painter of figurative
scenes to a painter
who, by appreciation and exploration of the quality of light and colour,
discovered, and was able to reveal, a small complete world in each picture.Bill Robson, like many
other painters, took part in
the huge step forward in Art, which was being made at this time ~
the
transition from figurative studies to working with light and colour
in new dimensions.
