Galloway Fisheries Trust Report ~ December 2003 | |||||||||||||||
Galloway Fishery Trust's report for the
D(K)DSFB, 4th December 2003. 1. GFT were contacted by Scottish Water regarding 'Lochinvar - Drought Order (Abstraction from Carsfad Loch)' on the 9/11/03. Following concerns raised by GFT, assurances were given that operation would have no affect on compensation flow down the Dee system and that a 5mm mesh would be fitted to the outflow instead of the standard 1.5cm filter. The mesh is necessary to ensure that juvenile perch cannot be sucked from Carsfad Loch (contains abundant perch) to Lochinvar (presently has no perch). 2. GFT responded to consultation document 'River Basin Districts - Proposals for Scotland'. The main issue of concern in the document was the suggestion that the designation of river basin districts in Scotland would include a single Scottish basin and a Cross border basin (include from the Scottish Solway side the Esk, Annan, Nith). This arrangement would split regions rivers in half. GFT responded raising concerns and highlighting the need to keep regions rivers together. Press release (25/11/03) from Scottish Executive states that Cross border basin will keep all Scottish Solway rivers together. 3. Following the publication of GFT's report 'Strategy for the Containment and Possible Eradication of American Signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) in the River Dee Catchment and Skyre Burn Catchment, Dumfries and Galloway' a programme of publicity has started. Meeting has been had between GFT, SNH and Police (WLO's). 4. Robin Rigg Fish Monitoring Group. The GFT have continued to be involved in the fisheries sub-committee of the main monitoring group. An additional report was commission by the FMG regarding fish/noise. A monitoring protocol has been submitted to cover salmon, sea trout, eels, lampreys, shad and sparling. 5. GFT have provided brief comments on proposed windfarm at Black Craig Hill and contact details for the DDSFB. Further information is awaited. 6. Information from the fish counter has been passed to the board. 7. GFT have been involved in the management of Loch Dee with Newton Stewart Angling Association. A management plan has been written and the NSAA ran fish traps for broodstock and collected over 35000 eggs. Indications are that the trout population in the loch may be starting to recover again. 8. GFT completed annual acid monitoring electrofishing at 6 sites on the Dargall Lane (tributary of Loch Dee) and Loch Grannoch outflow. 9. Dee catchment description is now live on www.floatingline.com. Any comments please to Catriona on mail@gallowayfisheriestrust.org. Brief beat descriptions can be added in the near future. |
